Howard League for Penal Reform

The Carlile Inquiry is an independent inquiry, established by the Howard League for Penal Reform, looking into the treatment of children in the penal system. The terms of reference are: To investigate the use of physical restraint, solitary confinement and forcible strip searching of children in prisons, secure training centres and local authority secure children's homes and to make recommendations. Professor Helen Cowie and Post-doctoral Research Fellow, Carrie Myers were invited to contribute to the recent Consultation day, chaired by Lord Carlile, to discuss restorative justice and violence reduction and how it impacts on the Inquiry.
Queen Sofia Centre

Queen Sofia Centre, University of Valencia, Spain

Professor Cowie is a Consultant to the Centre for the Promotion of Non-Violence at the Queen Sofia Centre, University of Valencia. She is going to give a talk at the Centre in November 2005, which will be translated into Spanish, and will become a Chapter in the Conference Proceedings book. Her paper is entitled "Addressing the Problem of School Violence: Working with the Relationship"
UNICEF

UNICEF

The UK Observatory have recently been commissioned by UNICEF to contribute to a UN global study on violence. UNICEF, in Kosovo, in partnership with the Provisional Institutes of Self-Government (PISG) are implementing a research programme looking at all the types of violence that occur in the school environment in Kosovo.
They will be supported in their work by Professor Helen Cowie, and UKO Researcher Tony Daly.
