Exploring the promotion of non-violence in schools: A participatory approach (2002-2005)

Objectives

To explore children's perspectives of psychological and physical violence in school and their views on their solutions for promoting non-violence, and to provide children with an opportunity for actively participating in the research process.

Design

Pilot work in one primary school followed by individual interviews, focus groups and activity days in two primary schools over one academic year.

Setting

Three primary schools in Wandsworth LEA.

Participants

Year 6 children in two study schools (n = 65) and one pilot school (n = 54).

Main outcome measures

Pilot: focus groups to pilot the facilitation of participatory research activities for the main study and provide data for the production of information materials for the main study. Main study: semi-structured interviews using drawings depicting a prototypical peer bullying story (adapted from Almeida, et al, 2001), focus groups and activity days using participatory research activities.
